Animal Research: Right or Wrong
Discussion of opponent Dr. Mroczek about animal research with Massachusetts Society for Medical Research president Ms. Higgins Cavalier and veterinarian Dr. Niemi. Discussion covers layers of animal advocacy and research licensing, oversight committees, numbers and kinds in animal usage, exclusion of rats and mice from many regulations in place for other species, philosophy of and against using animals, and the role and issues of lab technicians. Dr. Mroczek weaves interjections and principles for consideration against use of any animal for any research on the basis of it’s suffering and hapless vulnerability to be used – summarized in the fact that animals are sentient and willful and animals feel pain and terror – including the pain of existence in a small cage, isolation, boredom, to say the least of invasive procedures and illness. The Suffering of Animals in Research
Dr. Mroczek talks with Dr. Capaldo of the New England Anti Vivisection Society about the horrible, inhumane, and immoral treatment of animals in research, a belief shared by both drs. The conversation addresses the problem as one of ethics, human ignorance of what is really going on in research, bad science, wasteful per inane or redundant practices, economic motives behind it, biohazard in the millions of used of bodies and their disposal, and the VERY MINIMAL “PROTECTIONS” given to the hapless animals used. Dr. Capaldo stresses the slow and steady gains made by opponents to changes in animal research, that opponents are not “crazy”, and to think of what can be done rather than fall into hopelessness over it. A call is made to open debate – for researchers to come into the open and discuss with their challengers and the world, something they are loathe to do.
Genetic Engineering and Animals
Dr. Mroczek discusses genetic engineering of animals with Elaine Birkholz of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The discussion includes description of the processes and ends, description of aspects of experience for the hapless animals coercively subjected to such use, and especially description of the suffering and pain of animals victimized as objects or tools of such study and matters of what if any animal protections prevail. Warnings of the unknown but variably probable outcomes from genetic engineering that could be detrimental to human existence are also given. Discussion is broad and wide about what constitutes and what is at stake in unbridled genetic engineering using animals and what is tantamount to horrible animal suffering.

Dr. Mroczek makes a plea for animals as she tries to demonstrate the horror of the experience of an animal used in laboratory research as she sits in a cage. The parameters are physical and psychological.
Stop Research Using Animals
Dr. Mroczek gives further argument and insight into why research using animals is just plain untenable and wrong. Issues discussed include human insensitivity to suffering, use of animals as sheer objects – things to be used, that medicine cannot proceed or succeed on the backs of animals, non-animal-use ways for medicine, researchers and corporate business profit motivation, morality for humans, and, no matter how you slice it that animals feel pain and suffer. The lecture also includes an end section on a few non-animal matters of note.

Dr. Mroczek discusses with Dr. Paul Waldau, US Director of the Great Ape Project, about understanding and attending to the multifaceted ignominious and torture-some conditions of life for great apes species such as chimps, orangutans, gorillas, and bonobos, – and all animal life species in general. Dr. Waldau takes us through some of the remarkable abilities of great apes, talks of where, how and why greater awareness and protection of great apes and all animal life is needed, reviews patterns of human behavior that reflect a narrow impoverished perception of animals, tells of good and bad regarding science, and speaks to consumerism and economic growth models as perilous to ecological and spiritual fit.

Dr. Mroczek talks with an animal rights activist, using a pseudonym it is later discovered, who is working to try to stop animals from being used in research. His focus at the time of this discussion is Huntingdon research labs in the UK which uses animals for research. The activist gives evidence that is hard to bear for its utter depravity and video that is impossible to stomach.

Dr. Mroczek talks with Sue Webb, Animal Control Officer for Wellesley, Ma. Officer Webb is an experienced and highly knowledgeable person about animals, especially those we see in our woods and as our pets. She provides a bigger picture about animal problems such as their being hit by cars, their being abandoned or lost, and their foraging for food in areas where they normally would not venture because of loss of habitat, etc. officer Webb informs us about things we can do to manage living with animals in our midst. Officer Webb is an invaluable and rare resource. As an aside, I would like to add that her job is heroic and entails witness to a lot of suffering and pain.

The Animal Rescue League Helps Animals
Dr. Mroczek talks with Adoption Supervisor Melissa Cox about the work of the Animal Rescue League animal rescue organization. Alot of the focus is on cats and Ms Cox explains how persons generally tend to be more dismissive of cats but that in fact how a deep experience can be had in having a relation with one. Matters discussed are the overall intelligence of animals, the behavior of cats, the obligations and expense of owning an animal, the euthanasia of unwanted animals, the experience of staff who must deal with the tremendous animal misfortune they routinely witness, the emotionality of a pet owner suffering over problems or end of life for his or her animal, a description of the kinds of volunteer help persons can do such as fostering, etc. It is superior work done, for the most part, by dedicated persons of compassion for animals.

Brutal Sound Under the Sea
Dr. Mroczek talks with Ms Taffy Williams, environmentalist and Director of the New York Whale and Dolphin League who addresses LFA (low frequency active) sonar use in the ocean by militaries the world over. The sonar is reportedly used to locate other vessels, persons, objects, etc in the ocean. This high intensity sonar travels hundreds of miles in every direction of the ocean causing pain, destruction, disorientation, and death to cetaceans and other marine life which are all at its horrible mercy. It causes the tissue of airspaces such as lungs and ears to hemorrhage and tear. Pod strands are repeatedly correlated with naval use of LFA sonar. Ms Williams notes availability of so-called passive sonar which works by listening instead of sending sound and can perform the same function. Ms Williams believes that in modern society there is a fascination with sound (loud, intense) as power. In any event, the immoral consequences of LFA sonar use on marine life is insupportable. Scientists, scientific organizations, and activists have been fighting legally against it for years it but the practice continues.
On Nature and On Animals
Dr. Mroczek talks about the needs of and for nature followed by a discussion of animal suffering and rights. Environmentally, she begins by noting serious weather extremes plaguing the country and the world as juxtaposed against what should be reality but is not. She talks about great waste of water, destruction of vegetation, industrial smog, polluted air, around the clock, day in and day out. She notes the poisons afflicting us from automotive chemicals, printing chemicals, pesticides, plastics and their manufacture, etc, etc. She captures the gravity and pathos of our circumstance in a description of how environmental degradation managed to demise 1/4 billion butterflies of a species in one season. She tries to show that protecting the earth is protecting ourselves. She decries and refuses blanket “cost/benefit” “analyses” of how and why we do what we do.
At approximately 30′ into the lecture, she then reviews some of the horror realities animal ‘subjects’ endure in research and emphasizes how painful and depraved such research is. She condemns the practice of any research on animals.
Finally, she makes some points about how to conduct ourselves post 911 which had happened not long before this lecture.
The point for Dr. Mroczek is AWARENESS: not making anyone believe or think like herself or anyone else but to be aware of the realities around ourselves in a time when commercialism has usurped the front row of our brains.
